All about me

Paul Thompson

I was born in April 1976 at Newport General Hospital and lived in a village in West Wales called Penygroes.

At only 16 years old. I worked at Norton Industries in Penygroes where we made Bellows and Expansion Joints and I knew at that point that this was not where I wanted to be in life so moved onto the Red Lion in Llandybie as a kitchen porter/vegetable prep before becoming a breakfast chef, I had finally found my happy place.

April 1999 I was offered a position of trainee commis chef at Sheraton Heathrow Hotel and I enrolled at Thames Valley University in Slough where I studied and gained my catering qualifications and this was rewarded with a promotion to Demi Chef. The next few years saw me achieving my Intermediate Food Hygiene Certificate and gaining experience at the Renaissance Hotel at Heathrow, Sheraton Heathrow Hotel, Thistle Hyde Park Hotel, Thorpe Park conference centre and Alton Towers conference centre before returning to Sheraton Heathrow Hotel in 2010 until 2020.

I feel very blessed that I can now pursue my dreams of setting up my own catering company called Wizard Catering by Paul.

My love of Rugby

I started at Slough Rugby Club in 2010 as an interim Fixtures secretary and referee manager as Clive Blackman had been taken ill, the following season I was installed into those roles on a full time basis for the next 7 seasons.
I was also the Club Coach Coordinator for the club, this entailed making sure we had the adequate coaches for every age grade. I did this role for 4 seasons.

In 2011 the Vets team had a game planned but the referee that was tasked with the game had to pull out through injury, Ty Sterry was frantically looking for a referee, he was made aware I was able to referee the game and this started my role as a referee for the club.

I went back to playing for the 2nd Xv, I had not played for 20 years due to work commitments. After a while I decided to hang up my playing boots and take up coaching. Initially I helped Colin Williams at the under 6’s then I was asked to help the under 12’s with Martin and Tom.

In 2012 World Cup year every club was given 2 free spaces on the level 2 coaching course which I was lucky enough to be allocated one , this helped me in gaining my level 2 coaching license.

In 2013 I went onto take the whistle up and go onto the level 2 course to gain my qualifications to officiate at senior level, I am pleased to say that I am the official referee for Slough RfC, I have been a member of Buckingham Referee Society for 4 seasons now.
